Selene

African Penguin

Hi there! My name is Selene, and I’m a very special African Penguin. I was abandoned by my parents as a month-old chick, and at that time, I was so tiny and fragile that we didn’t know if I’d make it. But with lots of care and attention from my keepers, I’ve overcome many obstacles in my short life.

One of the biggest challenges I face is that I’m completely blind, but that doesn’t stop me from being a curious and playful penguin. I love playing with my sensory toys and vocalizing when my human mom talks to me. I’ve grown into a confident penguin, and I adore human interaction.

I may have a disability, but I’m not letting that hold me back. In fact, I see it as an opportunity to show others that being differently-abled is just a part of life, and I’m proud to be a true ambassador for my species. Despite my challenges, I’ve flourished into a beautiful and confident young adult African Penguin.

I’m especially proud to have made my debut with special needs kids, and I know that it was a great moment for them. I hope to continue to inspire others to see that anything is possible with a little love and care.
