My Story

Hi, I’m String, a quirky, fiercely independent African Penguin with a whole lot of love to give (on my terms, of course). My journey hasn’t been easy, but I’ve never let that stop me. After being rescued with a head injury, I was brought to SANCCOB, where I got the second chance I fought for. Now, I’m thriving. Even with blindness in my right eye and a neurological deficit, I embrace every single moment!

I love attention, especially head scratches, but I also love my space. I want to be included in the action… unless I don’t. I enjoy being with friends, unless I decide otherwise. My personality is as big as my spirit, and I’ll let you know exactly how I feel! My curiosity keeps me on my toes, and sometimes gets me into just a little trouble when I wander too close to the other penguins’ nest boxes. But when my favorite keepers arrive? I run to greet them with the warmest welcome you can imagine.

I don’t have a mate, but I do have all the love I need from my incredible rehab team. And now? I’m hoping to share that love on an international scale! The African penguin was officially classified as Critically Endangered in October 2024, which makes my story even more important. I am living proof of my species’ indomitable spirit, and why we deserve the protection and recognition we’re fighting for!
