My Story

Hello there!  My name is Rosie.  I may be half the size of a typical African penguin, but I make up for it with my larger-than-life personality.  Born with skeletal abnormalities and unable to walk, my Animal Care Specialists helped me by building me my own penguin ‘jump-a-roo’, which was a supportive device that helped keep me upright and learn what it felt like to support my own weight, move my feet, and eventually walk!  I now have a very signature waddle, known as the ‘Rosie Shuffle’, and do everything that a typical penguin does, just in my own way. I got my name ‘Rosie’ from Rosie the Riveter, an iconic symbol of strength and resilience, and a true example of what it means to be ONE TOUGH CHICK!

Because of the relationship I’ve developed with my Animal Care Specialists, once they’ve earned my trust, that trust runs deep.  So much so that one of my favorite ways to interact is by doing the ‘trust fall’, in which I waddle right up to them and fall into their arms to be appropriately spoiled and carried to one of my favorite spots, especially the pool.  I’m also known for my signature side-eye.  If I’m unimpressed, you’ll know it just before I shuffle off to more important business.

Despite my small size, I’ve made a huge impact.  I inspire so many guests, especially those with physical differences, and am a living example of what perseverance and determination look like, in a very adorable package.  I love sharing my story with our guests and the importance of conserving my species by shuffling through the Aquarium and visiting our guests.  While I’m the smallest penguin in my colony, I’m kind of a big deal!
