My Story

Hello there! My name’s Pepe. I hatched at Brookfield Zoo Chicago on March 13, 2012, which means this year is my golden hatchday—I’m turning 13! What better way to celebrate than with an acceptance into this year’s March of the Penguin Madness?

I’m not just any penguin, or any Brookfield Zoo Chicago animal for that matter. I was the very first Animal Ambassador at Brookfield Zoo Chicago, and I’ve spent my life helping people connect with penguins like me. Whether I’m out on a walk around the Living Coast, giving guests a friendly flipper-paddle, or sprucing up my nest with fun decorations, I always bring personal flair and purpose to everything that I do.

Through guest programs, social media, and even my own artwork, I’ve raised awareness and thousands of dollars for penguin conservation efforts in Punta San Juan. Every brushstroke and every waddle helps protect my wild Humboldt Penguin counterparts, and I’m honored to play my part in helping them thrive! With my light blue band and signature charm, I welcome visitors every day to Rocky Shores, reminding them why penguins are worth protecting.
