My Story

Hello everyone, I’m Lucy! At just four months old, I’m currently the youngest member of the African Penguin flock at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. But don’t let my age fool you! I may have started off as a calm and cautious chick, but now I’m bold, confident, and ready to take on the world!

My journey hasn’t been the easiest. When I was just two weeks old, I developed a serious respiratory illness while still being cared for by my parents, Keni and Guja. That’s when my amazing Animal Care and Animal Health Teams made a life-saving decision: they brought me to the Small Animal ICU, where I received oxygen, treatment, and round-the-clock love until I was strong enough to return to my colony.

Now, I’m thriving back home at Pinnacol African Penguin Point! I spend my days swimming, sunbathing, and eating plenty of fish. Every morning, as soon as my caretakers arrive, I waddle outside to claim my favorite spot—a tall rock overlooking the pool, where I can keep an eye on everything. I’m super friendly, too. I love following the animal care staff around while they work, just to make sure they know I’m very important!

I may have faced challenges early on, but I came out stronger than ever. Now, I want to inspire others to care about critically endangered African Penguins like me!
