My Story

Hello, I’m Ike. I’m the very first penguin chick to ever hatch at the ABQ BioPark! That makes me kind of special, but don’t worry, I stay humble… mostly. I’m a spunky, curious, and involved penguin. I like to know everything that’s going on, especially if it involves fish or my keepers.

My favorite activity is helping. And by “helping,” I mean getting my bill into everything. If the keepers are diving or cleaning windows, I’ll be there, “holding” their ropes and tools, even if they didn’t ask. During breeding season, I take my nest-building duties incredibly seriously. It’s mine, and I protect it with all the authority of a penguin twice my age.

I’m one of the biggest gentoos in the colony, rocking a handsome suit of feathers. While I love my keepers, my affection comes with boundaries. I’ll give you a hug, but don’t try to give one back. That’s too much, and I will let you know!

I may be young, but I’m a tough competitor. I push my way to the front for smelt and attention, and my love, which sometimes involves a bite or a flipper slap, is always enthusiastic. Hatched the week of Thanksgiving in 2022, I’m a special guy, and my keepers are grateful for me every single year.
