My Story

Hi, I’m Floppy, and if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I never back down from a challenge. My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s made me stronger. Because of that, I’m now here to show the world what perseverance looks like.

Just over a year after I hatched, my keepers at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium noticed swelling near my shoulder. An X-ray revealed a broken flipper bone that wouldn’t heal on its own. Surgery to repair it wasn’t an option, so the animal care team made the tough but life-saving decision to amputate my flipper.

That meant I had to relearn everything: how to swim, dive, float, navigate my habitat, and even get out of the water. But with the support of my incredible keepers and my penguin colony, who welcomed me back with open flippers, I did it! Now, a few years later, I’m back to being my energetic, active self, proving every day that I’m just as capable as any other penguin. I may be an underdog, but I don’t let that define me. I let my courage do all the talking I need to do!
