My Story

Hi, I’m BlackOrange, and I have quite the story to tell! My journey started a little differently than most, as I needed a bit of extra help making my way into the world. My parents, Bea and Opie, were first-time parents, and while they did a great job helping my older sibling hatch, they got a little overwhelmed when it was my turn. Luckily, my keepers stepped in, moving my egg to an incubator and giving me around-the-clock care until I was strong enough to return to the penguin building.

From there, I’ve been growing, thriving, and learning alongside other chicks. I’ve shed my downy fluff and grown my very first set of waterproof feathers. I even completed swim lessons. Graduation day, here I come! Soon, I’ll be taking my next big step: finally joining the colony!

Not only am I a symbol of resilience, but I’m also proof of the incredible care penguins receive at Tanganyika. My parents were both hatched here, too, making me a second-generation success story in their breeding program. With African Penguins now listed as critically endangered, maintaining a strong, genetically diverse population is more important than ever.
